Best Places to Watch Wildlife in Montana
August 23rd, 2011
There is no place quite like Montana. Montana is a big state with sweeping vistas in the eastern reaches and mountainous forests, sprawling parks and crystal streams in the western half. Montana has a lot of wilderness left and for the nature lover it is a paradise on earth. Montana is known for its wildlife and outside of Yellowstone Park there is no better place in the lower 48 than Montana to view animals in their natural habitats.
The eastern half of the state is made up of rolling grasslands cut up by breaks and gullies and is home to herds of antelope and pockets of mule deer. Antelope can often be seen along the roads and with a good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope, mule deer can be observed in the hills in the morning and late afternoons.
The western mountains are home to elk, deer, bear, wild turkeys, moose and many of the smaller mammals. Drives into the back country of the National Forests are productive for wildlife viewing and the many hiking trails the state affords will get you back to where the wild things live. Wildlife viewing in Montana is very hard to beat.
